PURPOSE AND SCOPE: 

Under the supervision of the principal: the athletic director coordinates and administrates all athletic programs in accordance with the school philosophy and diocesan policies; promotes the existing athletic program and initiates new programs as deemed necessary by the administration of the school; keeps the principal informed of all matters related to the athletic program; assists in preparation of the athletic budget and monitors the finances throughout the year; interviews and recommends personnel for coaching positions; meets with coaches as needed to communicate school policies, schedules, eligibility requirements, etc.; supervises the coaching staff; coordinates the athletic schedule with the AIA conference needs and with the school schedule and publishes the schedule to the school community; determines and approves the usage of the athletic facilities with first priority to school groups and to outside groups as feasible; supervises all home athletic contests; coordinates the supervision of students in all areas of the gym at all times; helps foster the total personal and physical growth of the students; serves as the school’s official representative with the AIA; performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal. 

 

The Athletic Director assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing. The Athletic Director contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and to the community.  By bearing witness to Christ, His Church and the teachings of our Catholic faith, the Athletic Director cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students.  The Athletic Director leads, instructs, and utilizes effective pedagogy; obtains necessary academic certificates; participates in continual professional development; maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school; and imparts a Catholic worldview through the curriculum.  In addition to academic preparation, record-keeping and accountability, the Athletic Director, as a member of a “house” within Notre Dame Preparatory High School, serves as a mentor and campus minister to all students.   

This position requires the ability to effectively communicate via phone and email; ensure that all duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner; flexibility, forward thinking and managing deadlines; willingness to seek the latest educational practices and implement; and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and a wide degree of creativity and latitude are expected. All new faculty and staff are provided with a mentoring program. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education; shows evidence of knowledge of the Catholic philosophy of education; promotes gospel values and Catholic moral teaching; upholds the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church; provides opportunities for the students to be prepared for life in today’s Church and society. 
  • Administers and coordinates the total athletic program in accordance with the school philosophy and diocesan policies; schedules all athletic contests in consultation with the AIA, principal, and head coaches of each program; publicizes all athletic contests to students, parents, staff, and the community at large; supervises all home athletic contests; conducts feasibility studies when needed in determining the addition of new sports to the athletic program and evaluate the success of these additions (documentation may be necessary to decide whether or not adding a new program is feasible); determines and supervises the process for expanding the number of teams in a particular program and evaluates the success of the expansion; keeps the principal informed of all matters related to the athletic program. 
  • Assists in preparing the annual budget for the athletic department and monitors athletic finances throughout the year; approves all potential uniform and equipment purchases as requested or needed and submit to the financial administrator or principal for approval; directs, organizes, and controls all fundraising efforts for the athletic department in conjunction with the financial administrator and within the guidelines set by the principal and the Development Council; determines and approves usage of athletic facilities by outside groups and monitors that usage with appropriate personnel coverage and rental charges that are contracted and paid for through the main office; works with the field improvement committee to develop and maintain the fields; oversees gym maintenance and reports needs and concerns to the maintenance director. 
  • Supervises and evaluates each coach and each program annually, particularly evaluating the total program in terms of recruiting, off season programs, quality of coaching, and other related duties; interviews and submits to the administration the names of nominations for open coaching positions; arranges for coaching contracts, particularly for off-campus coaches, in conjunction with the principal; in-services and guides new coaching staff members; meets with coaches as needed before, during, and after their seasons of play to handle questions and areas of mutual concern; conducts monthly meetings of the coaching staff (August through May) and prepares the agenda for each meeting; supervises the coaching staff in regards to securing All-Conference and All-State selections for all teams; maintains regular communication with all members of the coaching staff, particularly off-campus coaches, via coaches mailboxes, letters, reminders, etc. 
  • Serves as the school’s official representative for the AIA; attends required AIA and conference meetings with the assistant principal’s permission; oversees the athletic department recruiting program to be carried out by each program in compliance with AIA regulations; maintains files of all coaches currently in the program and communicates to coaches any civil, diocesan, or AIA policies that affect the coaching staff. 
  • Plans for practice facilities and home game locations and handles the arrangements for the set-up and administration of all home athletic contests (i.e., field/gym set-up, officials, scorekeepers, timers, chain gang, announcers, spotters, concessions, etc.); coordinates all transportation for athletic teams; coordinates the procedures for securing early dismissals and overnight trips for athletic teams. 
  • Coordinates the supervision of the students in all areas of the gymnasium at all times with the cooperation of the P.E. Department Chairperson and all P.E. Department and Athletic personnel; communicates with and involves all members of the faculty and staff in the athletic program; serves as academic advisor to the student-athletes and coordinates with coaches and the school staff; communicates the eligibility status of all student-athletes to the head coaches (i.e., copies of failure lists from the progress report and ineligible list published at the end of each quarter); coordinates the process for college recruiting and the student-athletic scholarship applications in conjunction with the guidance director; arranges for Athlete Recognition Receptions in conjunction with the Athletic Booster Club. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION 

  • Must be a practicing Catholic (BFOQ)  
  • Must have a bachelor's degree; Advanced degrees preferred 
  • Must be certified by the Arizona State Department of Education as a teacher and administrator and meet applicable NCA requirements (or be able to obtain administrative certification prior to start of position) 
  • Must have knowledge of guidelines set by the AIA and follow all policies, procedures and regulations set therein 
  • Must meet Ministry Formation Certification as required by Diocesan Policy 
  • Must be in good physical condition  
  • Must have initiative, creativity, and problem-solving skills; use good judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations
