POSITION SUMMARY
The high school head coach will work within the framework of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) to provide leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of student athletes in their sport through coordinating, planning, evaluation, and implementation of programs. All coaches have the responsibility of carrying on their respective sport within the best interest of Marana Unified School District and its students within the bounds of the rules set forth by the AIA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
The coach must demonstrate and apply leadership, integrity, responsibility, self-control, and knowledge of rules and regulations at all times. It is necessary and important that the coach act in a responsible and professional manner. The coach must set a good example and provide a healthy lifestyle.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrates a high level of dependability, organization, respect, integrity, and sportsmanship
- Utilizes positive interpersonal relations and effective communication skills
- Exhibits effective problem solving skills and judgment
- Manages the development of the sports program at all levels to ensure continuity, program growth, and success
- Select, train, and manage additional coaches in program (paid and volunteer)
- Maintains inventory of all sporting equipment and supplies
- Works with administrators, purchasing staff, and vendors to procure needed athletic equipment and supplies
- Communicates expectations to team members and families at the beginning of each season. This communication includes information for practice schedules, athlete expectations, and playing time distribution.
- Organizes and implements an efficient and effective try-out systems, practice plans, and game plans. This includes the organization of additional coaching staff members.
- Surveys playing surfaces and environment to ensure player safety
- Complies with district and school procedures
- Applies knowledge of sport to develop players at all levels of ability
- Hold athletes to high behavioral and academic expectations
- Ensures sportsmanship is displayed by team members during practice, travel, and competition
- Works to increase knowledge of sport and player development
- Partners with parent groups to positively impact experience of players
- Follows all procurement and fundraising rules and procedures
- Organizes and implements transition activities for middle school athletes
- Encourages and supports skill development throughout the year
- Proactively portrays a positive image of sports team in the community
- Respects the integrity and judgment of sports officials. The head coach is responsible for all bench personnel by rule.
- Fulfills responsibilities to provide health services and an environment free of safety hazards. Administer basic first aid and CPR in the event of a medical emergency.
- Encourages the highest standards of conduct and scholastic achievement among all athletes.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience coaching assigned sport
- Exceptional communication skills with students and parents, and the ability to work with people who have a variety of skills, backgrounds, and temperaments
- Must possess a patient, positive and proactive attitude in dealing with students and parents
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification
- Successful completion of the online National Federation of State High School Association’s (NFHS) Concussions in Sports
- A valid Arizona Teaching certificate or completion of the NFHS online (www.nfhslearn.org) courses: Fundamentals of Coaching
- A valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card

Purpose Statement
The job of Head Coach is done for the purpose/s of designing and implementing the athletic program for assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; providing supervision of other coaching personnel; providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program; using sound instructional techniques in overseeing program activities; serving as a positive role model to student athletes; and serving in a liaison capacity for the school and program with other schools both within and/or outside the district, to the community, and to various organizations. Individuals in this job classification are assigned to a position for assigned sport(s) and oversees all aspects of the respective athletic program(s).
This job reports to Athletic Director
Essential Functions
Assesses student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback to students on their individual performance and/or determining team placement.
Attends a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. for the purpose of receiving and conveying information related to their role.
Conducts a variety of supporting activities (e.g. parent orientations, recognition events, banquets, etc.) for the purpose of providing information regarding the program and/or recognizing participants’ accomplishments.
Develops team and individual practice regimes for student athletes (e.g. strength, speed, agility, nutritional, injury prevention, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing and improving their performance.
Develops game strategies/plans (e.g. analyzes opponent strengths and weaknesses, analyzing athlete abilities, creating plays/strategies, etc.) for the purpose of preparing the team and individual student athletes for the competition.
Guides other coaching personnel as may be appropriate in instructional techniques, organization of practices, supervision guidelines and responsibilities, etc. for the purpose of providing guidance and mentoring.
Identifies program needs for the purpose of providing recommendations of expenditures for activities, equipment, supplies, etc. that will enhance the assigned athletic program.
Implements practice schedules and related events (e.g. usage of facilities and equipment, staff assignments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient program operation.
Instructs student athletes for the purpose of promoting individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Maintains a variety of records (e.g. game/student athlete statistics, insurance, signed permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories, etc.) for the purpose of complying with district, athletic conference, state requirements, and/or report scores and strategies to local news media.
Monitors student athletes’ academic eligibility for the purpose of both complying with AIA requirements as well as providing appropriate intervention (e.g. counseling, tutoring, etc.) to students identified as needing assistance to maintain their athletic eligibility.
Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc. for the purpose of providing direction and monitoring activities.
Promotes athletic program through a variety of activities (e.g. conducts off-season clinics, information on skill-camps, attends community meetings, etc.) for the purpose of increasing interest and participation.
Responds to inquiries of students, parents, other school personnel, media representatives, college representatives, etc. for the purpose of providing information, assistance and/or direction.
Keeps their school athletic director informed when issues arise that impact the school’s athletic program (e.g. liability concerns, parent concerns, etc.).
Provides appropriate and prudent supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
Explains and discusses the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes in their program.
Maintains high standards of personal conduct. Coaches should serve as role models for their athletes.
Ensures that all coaches involved with their program, whether paid or volunteer are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Position Summary
The Athletic Director at TPA is a campus leader responsible for guiding a mission-aligned athletics program that complements TPAs classical values, cultivates virtue, and enhances student life. The AD oversees all aspects of grades 612 athletics, ensuring that every sport reflects TPAs commitment to discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, and the holistic development of each student.
This role calls for a leader who communicates proactively and consistentlywith students, coaches, faculty, parents, and administrationto foster enthusiasm, unity, and high standards across the program. The AD will restore vitality and structure to athletics, set clear expectations, and be a visible model of the virtues of perseverance, leadership, and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and implement a cohesive vision and culture for TPA athletics, rooted in the schools mission and values.
- Actively promote the value of athletics as an essential aspect of virtue formation and community life.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and support athletic coaches for all teams.
- Provide ongoing professional development, feedback, and accountability for coaches.
- Set clear expectations for coaching standards, practice structure, and student-athlete conduct.
- Serve as the primary communicator for the athletics programkeeping students, families, faculty, and staff informed, engaged, and unified.
- Work closely with the Headmaster, faculty, and administration to ensure alignment between academics, athletics, and school culture.
- Secure and manage usage agreements for athletic facilities, coordinating with external organizations as needed to ensure students and teams have access to appropriate spaces for practices and competitions.
- Develop and manage annual athletic budgets; oversee purchasing, fundraising, and resource allocation.
- Organize and maintain team schedules, including practices, games, travel, and facility use.
- Ensure compliance with all internal and external athletic regulations.
- Manage inventory of uniforms and equipment; coordinate facility maintenance and improvements.
- Uphold high standards of conduct, sportsmanship, and personal growth among all student-athletes.
- Support student athletes in their academic, athletic, and college recruiting pursuits.

The job of Head Coach is done for the purpose/s of designing and implementing the athletic program for assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; providing supervision of other coaching personnel; providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program; using sound instructional techniques in overseeing program activities; serving as a positive role model to student athletes; and serving in a liaison capacity for the school and program with other schools both within and/or outside the district, to the community, and to various organizations. Individuals in this job classification are assigned to a position for assigned sport(s) and oversees all aspects of the respective athletic program(s).
This job reports to Athletic Director
Essential Functions
- Assesses student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback to students on their individual performance and/or determining team placement.
- Attends a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. for the purpose of receiving and conveying information related to their role.
- Conducts a variety of supporting activities (e.g. parent orientations, recognition events, banquets, etc.) for the purpose of providing information regarding the program and/or recognizing participants’ accomplishments.
- Develops team and individual practice regimes for student athletes (e.g. strength, speed, agility, nutritional, injury prevention, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing and improving their performance.
- Develops game strategies/plans (e.g. analyzes opponent strengths and weaknesses, analyzing athlete abilities, creating plays/strategies, etc.) for the purpose of preparing the team and individual student athletes for the competition.
- Guides other coaching personnel as may be appropriate in instructional techniques, organization of practices, supervision guidelines and responsibilities, etc. for the purpose of providing guidance and mentoring.
- Identifies program needs for the purpose of providing recommendations of expenditures for activities, equipment, supplies, etc. that will enhance the assigned athletic program.
- Implements practice schedules and related events (e.g. usage of facilities and equipment, staff assignments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient program operation.
- Instructs student athletes for the purpose of promoting individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Maintains a variety of records (e.g. game/student athlete statistics, insurance, signed permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories, etc.) for the purpose of complying with district, athletic conference, state requirements, and/or report scores and strategies to local news media.
- Monitors student athletes’ academic eligibility for the purpose of both complying with AIA requirements as well as providing appropriate intervention (e.g. counseling, tutoring, etc.) to students identified as needing assistance to maintain their athletic eligibility.
- Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc. for the purpose of providing direction and monitoring activities.
- Promotes athletic program through a variety of activities (e.g. conducts off-season clinics, information on skill-camps, attends community meetings, etc.) for the purpose of increasing interest and participation.
- Responds to inquiries of students, parents, other school personnel, media representatives, college representatives, etc. for the purpose of providing information, assistance and/or direction.
- Keeps their school athletic director informed when issues arise that impact the school’s athletic program (e.g. liability concerns, parent concerns, etc.).
- Provides appropriate and prudent supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
- Explains and discusses the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes in their program.
- Maintains high standards of personal conduct. Coaches should serve as role models for their athletes.
- Ensures that all coaches involved with their program, whether paid or volunteer are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

ABILITY is required to communicate with persons of varied educational and cultural backgrounds; dealing with frequent interruptions; exhibiting strong leadership; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; modeling sportsmanship and enforcing sportsmanlike behavior among students; motivating participating student athletes; providing a firm, fair, and consistent discipline approach; providing leadership, direction, and team building; traveling to off campus athletic events; traveling to off campus competitions; and working extended hours that may include evenings and/or weekends.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
