TITLE: Head Wrestling Coach-Youngker High School

SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Stipend - Based on Extra Duty Salary Schedule

GENERAL STATEMENT of RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Wrestling Coach will be responsible for providing a positive working relationship with students, faculty, staff, and parents. Responsibilities will include coaching student athletic programs and ensuring adherence to AIA guidelines.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:
Coach student athletes in area of assigned responsibility
Organize and supervise a total sports program
Establish and maintain good rapport with students, staff, faculty and parents.
Confirms that all athletes have met AIA and district eligibility requirements before participation in scheduled events.
Communicates team policies to all athletes (V, JV, FR)
Follows district and school drug/alcohol codes
Reports Team Roster and Athletic Scores to the Athletic Director's office.
Assists Athletic Director with athletic events for assigned athletic team.

QUALIFICATIONS: Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
Valid Arizona teacher certification, or Arizona coaching certification, or Level 1 Certification issued by National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) (This requirement is only for Head/Varsity positions)
Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).
Obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
Completion of NFHS online education course entitled "Fundamentals of Coaching". Course.
Completion of NFHS online education course entitled, "Concussion in Sports - What You Need to Know."
Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.
Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work.
Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
Uses and properties of supplies and equipment.
Customer service principles.
Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.
Modern office technology.

The evaluation is done by the Athletic Director.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The Head wrestling coach reports directly to the Athletic Director on site.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The high school coach will work within the framework of the high school athletic program to provide leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of student athletes in their sport through coordinating, planning, evaluation, and implementation of programs.  All coaches have the responsibility of carrying on their respective sport within the best interest of San Simon Unified School District and its students within the bounds of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) bylaws.  High school athletics programs will be a minimum of four days a week while in season.  The head coach reports to the Athletic Director.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  (Including, but not limited to the following)

  1. Demonstrate a high level of dependability and organization

  2. Design and implement a unified defensive and offensive system across the entire boys' basketball program ensuring Junior Varsity (JV) athletes are preparing for Varsity-level competition

  3. Organizes effective practice (to include film study/review) and game plans. This includes the organization of additional coaching staff members.

  4. Applies knowledge of sport to develop players at all levels of ability

  5. Utilize positive interpersonal relations and effective communication skills

  6. Communicates expectations to team members and families at the beginning of each season. This communication includes information for practice schedules, athlete expectations, and playing time distribution

  7. Exhibit effective problem solving skills and judgment

  8. Maintains inventory of all sporting equipment and supplies

  9. Works with administrators, purchasing staff, and vendors to procure needed athletic equipment and supplies

  10. Follows all procurement and fundraising rules and procedures

  11. Complies with district and school procedures, and all applicable AIA bylaws

  12. Hold athletes to high behavioral and academic expectations

  13. Model sportsmanship displayed by team members during practice, travel, and competition

  14. Works to increase knowledge of sport and player development

  15. Partners with parent groups to positively impact experience of players

  16. Travel with and supervise players on the bus (driving a non-CDL vehicle may be required)

  17. Performs other duties as assigned

In addition, the coach at the high school level will collaborate with the athletic director to identify their role and responsibilities with regards to:

  1. Promotion of the sport

  2. Parent communication/team letters

  3. Inventory - uniform and equipment management

  4. Camps to support skill development

  5. Communication with junior high/middle school programs of same sport

  6. Community building events

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. All head varsity coaches shall have valid Arizona Teaching Certificate, Arizona Coaching Certificate, or 

  2. Have completed the National Federation of State High School Associations Level I Certification online at https://nfhslearn.com within forty-five (45) days from date of hire as well as complete the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course, or approved equivalent, within forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.  Additionally, all head and assistant coaches, whether paid or volunteer, shall complete the NFHS online education course entitled “Concussion in Sports – What You Need to Know” prior to starting coaching duties.

  3. Complete or have equivalent training in the following areas prior to coaching:  Title IX (Equal Access/Opportunity), Seizure Awareness, Food Allergy/Epipen, Naloxone (Opioid Overdose), and Albuterol (Emergency Inhaler) training.

  4. Become or be currently First Aid/CPR/AED Certified prior to coaching.

  5. Have or obtain a valid IVP fingerprint clearance card/background check (at employee's expense) from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

  6. Proof of immunity to rubeola (measles), and rubella (German measles), or proof of MMR immunization.

  7. Flexibility to dedicate significant afternoon, evening, and weekend hours during the season of sport - including travel for away games.

  8. Be able to lift 50 pounds.

  9. Be able to stand continuously for extended lengths of time (often longer than two hours) and be able to move effectively during practice and games.

  10. Exceptional communication skills with students and parents, and the ability to work with people who have a variety of skills, backgrounds, and temperaments.

  11. Must possess a patient, positive and proactive attitude in dealing with students and parents.

  12. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as either a head coach, or as an assistant at any level.  However, experience is not required.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

The High School Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach reports to the athletic director.  The High School Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach will interact cooperatively with all other staff positions.  All elements of good social interactions will be practiced.
